Look, Domino is a RAD platform designed to help groups of people work together easily, hence the name groupware. Sure, it's limited (although not nearly as much as you would think), but any product is. Domino does what it's supposed to do very, very well. If you try pushing it beyond its envelope, that's when you run into problems.
As for solutions developed in Notes being "expensive", I'd venture to guess that if you see an expensive solution in Domino it's either because someone is trying to make Domino do something it's not designed for, or you've got developers who don't know what they're doing.
